One of the biggest skills a photographer needs is timing. This is especially true in sports photography, where a split second could mean missing a great photo opportunity. This is why some of the best sports snappers develop an instinct for timing perfect photos. Some of them also have an instinct for funny pictures, and here we take a look at some of the best ones!

I Can't Get My Eyes Off

It's no longer a new thing to see male cheerleaders alongside the girls. In fact, if you must know, the association that holds cheerleaders together was founded by a man with the name Lawrence Herkimer. This man didn't stop at founding the cheerleaders association; he also was the creator of the Herkie Jump, a popular side split jump.

Anyway, this perfectly timed photo shows how inappropriate things can get when guys cheer with girls. The guy in question seems stumped for words and just can't look away while trying a simple lift - awkward as well as embarrassing.

Woah!

With the strenuous sport of cheerleading comes different expressions and the girls on top seem to have some good ones going on. But that isn't what we're concerned about; it's the ladies below and their facial expressions that give us a tickle.

What could they have seen? If they were able to pull this stunt off, then they must have been practicing, but why the shock on a D-day. We think it's either all part of the action, or they really didn't practice in skirts up until the very last moment.

Tackle Anybody You See

It's usually risky to cheer, especially with all the throwing and backflips, and all these can get messy, yet cheerleaders still have to stand on the sides, well exposed to every move and action. It may sound cool to witness the game from the front row point of view, but it is actually an endangering act.

In this perfectly timed photo, one can see James Witten of the Dallas Cowboys seriously tackling Melissa Kellerman, who, on the other hand, doesn't look hurt. The look on her face tells more of a surprise and how she's humorously taking everything in, whoever taught the Cowboy to tackle his own team cheerleader!

Don't Dive Without The Face

The man is Qin Kai, a professional diver who represented China in the 2012 Olympic Games. His face in the picture speaks so much of the difficulty associated with the dive he made.

One may assume that diving in a public pool and diving for the competition is the same or that it's just about the splash, but it is way more than that in actuality. In fact, as a professional diver, the less the splash, the better, and that is the reason the cameras found this face – an exact representation of the difficulties involved.

Scary And Skillful

Looking at this woman, you'd want to believe you saw a mermaid, assuming mermaids had feet. Or maybe you'd be scared on sight, but give it a while; you may, in fact, end up in awe of the skillfulness employed to pull this off.

It looks like the lady was swimming in synch when the photographer perfectly caught the moment. If it really was, then this fantastic dexterity may be earning some cool points on the boards, plus giving the world something to talk about later. We'd declare this swimmer the winner if we were to judge, though.

Cheerleading at 5, Cocktails at 6

With cheerleading's evolution came so many uniforms – from ones that covered the squads of the '90s to more revealing attires currently worn to almost every game. Right now, if it's not short and revealing, it's not for a cheerleader.

What then amazes us is this photo of cheerleaders, wearing what seems to be cocktail dresses and looking really confident in them - probably because they were Texas Christian University cheerleaders and had to be unique. It's a wonder how they could spin, jump and form pyramids in a uniform like that, but we hope it worked.

We Love To See The Face

Some moves in cheerleading require lots of practice before the actual performance. Moves like the T-motion, also referred to as Arms Extension, Hand Clasp, and Fist on Hips, require serious learning before they are ready for display to the public, and we believe that was indeed what was supposed to go down here.

However, it seems like the cheerleaders in this photo got a little carried away and failed to present the correct performance. The expression on their faces is far more reminiscent of the Maori's haka than a traditional cheerleading routine.

I Do More Than Just Jump

Aside from basic cheerleading moves, there are often signature moves a cheerleader has to be good with and being athletic enough to make this kind of jump is just one of them. This cheerleader demonstrates a perfect Toe Jump, which involves using the entire body to leap incredibly high up.

The strength is generated from the legs and swung arms help to achieve more height and momentum. While this useful cheerleading technique is necessary, other advanced jumps like The Hurdler jump and the Spread Eagle jump, where you spread the arms and legs, can also be learned to deliver a more impressive performance.

Definitely Looking For Gold

The athlete in the "perfectly" timed photo is the famed Lebron James, who ranks easily as one of modern basketball's best players, and that alone should let you know that his every move is watched closely.

With a finger up his nostril, we're not sure what he was searching for, but we think it must have been valuable considering how determined he looks. One would say it's no big deal to pick his nose, or that it is, in fact, human to, but the truth remains that it is frowned upon to be doing so in plain sight, but a paparazzi photograph, however, is a different matter.

NBA Smackdown!

Although this is probably a cheerleading stunt gone wrong, the picture does give the impression that these two athletes are taking each other on in a basketball court and wrestling crossover match, making it appear that the man is getting ready to bodyslam this poor woman into a world of hurt.

Surprisingly, it would not be the first time the two sports collided. One of the most noted occasions where wrestling met the NBA was when Shaquille O'Neal matched up against The Big Show in the WWE. Apparently, it's a battle many fans on both sides still reminisce about today!

I Believe I Can Fly

Wouldn't it be nice if gorgeous women could fly through the air with a smile on their face while dunking basketballs? Well, look no further than this perfectly timed shot here!

Pictured is Brazilian footie player Willian doing a celebratory dance after scoring a goal. So on the spot was the lensman's timing that the Brazilian looked instead like the four-armed Hindu god Vishnu. Oh well, the second pair of arms would have been useful anywhere else- except at soccer, where the use of hands is not allowed.

Pictures are supposed to paint a thousand words, while here, this picture is trying to paint a thousand details worth of actions and emotions. The photographer managed to catch more than a winning moment here; the player will surely remember this -ahem- many arms and many scored goals later.

Blindfold Tennis

The magic of zoomed-in view has done it again and caught this hairy situation. There are many things to capture in a tennis match, endless angles, and demanding action, but this is in a league of its own.

Have you heard about the new sport called blindfold tennis? It is a game where players' eyes are covered, of course. What passes for eye cover, you ask? They are not picky; maybe a folded scarf, eye patches, or even your hair will do. We're just kidding. This photo makes us act silly. Well, whatever is happening here, we are sure about one thing - Miss tennis has got a game!

Timing Is Everything

If you're a man looking at this photo, we bet you're cringing a much as we are. You know the look on this NFL player's face all too well, and everybody knows that unless that ball gets stopped, somebody is going to be in for a world of hurt.

Therefore, you wouldn't find it hard to believe that they make so much more money through sponsors and for merely making glamorous appearances - worth every penny, we say!

We're just joking around and what you see here is the Minnesota Vikings cheer squad all dressed up for Halloween! Sometimes these girls get into other characters on special days, and we think you'll agree that finding that red and white striped little man would be a whole lot easier if he looked like this lady.

Former basketball superstar Dennis Rodman might be famous for his eccentric ways these days, but before he did things like marry himself, he was a force to be reckoned with on the court.

When it came to defensive plays and scoring on rebounds, Rodman was second to none. He managed to average fifteen points per game over more than seven years. Don't believe us? You wouldn't think that male cheerleaders are a thing, but apparently, they've been part of the sport since it's inception. NFL legend Tom Brady is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. When Tom joined the New England Patriots, he set record after record and won the hearts of fans across the entire league. Yes, that's right. Even people who support other franchises love this magnificent man!

We can all agree that cheerleaders are some of the most influential people in a game, making sure that the crowd is all riled up for the match. The routines and formations that they perform are some of the coolest things we've seen, but they can be dangerous if something goes wrong since it might lead to a catastrophe.

That is what happened here, one of the girls miscalculated a move, and everyone came tumbling down. The three other ladies did their best to soften the impact, and we hope none of the girls were seriously injured!

For the most part, we know cheerleaders to be girly and bubbly; we don't expect to see one that is as well-toned as this one. While the stunts and performances require them to be flexible and fit, this lady took it to a whole new level and put in some work in the gym!

Her friend is jealous of her biceps, and we don't blame her, look at that arm! With such a muscular person in your team, you need not worry; we bet she can even replace one of the boys playing if need be!

Face-Fist Bump

It's common for opponents to boo each other's teams during any match and throw some nasty words here and there; it's all part of the experience. However, some people go too far and suffer dire consequences, like this guy found out.

This image was taken during an NFL game in 1985, when New England Patriots battled the Los Angeles Raiders. It's said that the Patriots general manager Patrick Sullivan was bad-mouthing the Raiders' defensive player, and even after his team won, the trash talk didn't stop, prompting Matt Millen, the Raiders' linebacker, to throw a hard-hitting punch. We hope Patrick was okay after that, and he’ll watch his words next time.

High Flier

In sports history, we don't think we've seen an image that's iconic as this. When wide receiver Antonio Brown caught the kick during the game, punter Spencer Lanning was right there blocking his movement, and Brown chose the shortest route, to jump over him.

While it is an illegal maneuver, and Brown was penalized for it, it did make for an incredible moment that anyone who watched that game would never forget. Also, can we take a moment and acknowledge how high Brown jumped, to evade the tackle? Talk about insane fitness levels!

The Fashionable Player

You might know Clay Matthews from his performances on the pitch as an NFL player, winning the Super Bowl with the Greenbay Packers, but did you know that the player has an active showbiz life outside the sport? Matthews has appeared on numerous productions, including the WWE as a guest referee.

His talents are pretty diverse, and we won't be surprised if some fashion or hair products companies go after his signature to land a modeling gig if this image is anything to go by. With such physique and glorious hair, he would make the front cover magazine page.

Runs in The Family

Most of us are sports fans, and we probably picked up the love for our respective teams from our parents, and the idea of passing it over to your kids isn't a new concept. This mother decided that she would make sure that she and her unborn child would enjoy the game, live, despite the pregnancy.

We hope that the baby grows up to play for the Raiders at some point, as it seems they've already been inducted into the fan group. This is the epitome of ardent fanaticism, and the whole team must be proud of her!

Playing in the *NFL8 has its perks; apart from being famous, the players earn colossal sums of money from their franchises and endorsements. As such, they are known to live flashy lifestyles, buying luxurious cars and mansions and, for some, getting gold teeth.

Matt Elam, a former Baltimore Ravens player, is one with the dentures, and he found out the hard way that one can lose his teeth in the game after being accidentally hit on the face after a tackle. He must be glad he had his helmet to stop his grill and face from getting hurt.

Close Contact

During any game, it's not uncommon to see players getting passionate about their craft, and sometimes it gets intense to the point that they throw punches at each other. You might think former Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thomas and Golden State Warriors' David West were about to hug, but that isn't the case; tempers were flaring at that moment.

We have no idea what led to their reaction, but whatever it is, it must've been serious, judging by their expressions. So bad was their fight that the teammates had to intervene after the referees could not separate them. Whoever won must've had a huge smile after the match.

 

Ouchie In The South

That looks painful! Just look at the facial expression of the SuperSport United player named Thabiso Nkoana. Unfortunately for him, it's not common practice to wear a cup in soccer, so that is direct contact with the balls, but not the ball. Rooi Mahamutsa was shown a red card and apologized to Nkoana after what happened.

While people tend to believe that soccer is a soft sport, this photo proves that there is danger in it. This match was between Supersport United and Orlando Pirates, two of the most successful soccer teams in South Africa. They were playing in a competition called the MTN8.

Passion, Mission, Goal

Italians are not known for holding back emotions. They do not wait to express what needs to be said. The lensman felt it his duty to snap this photo at the exact moment of passion- a moment of love for all parties involved.

Keeper Lazio and Abdoulay Konko were having a celebratory moment or two. The forlorn striker showed that he could use a hug too. But alas, there is no one for him. So a pole is a fair game at the moment. Lazio looked on and wondered if they have inspired the man-pole hug. Oh well, sports and Italians do go well together.

Faces of American Football

Super Bowl is known for its many winning moments. Photojournalists can choose to immortalize impressive split-second actions. In this, however, the lensman decided to zoom in on the hilarious expressions of Eli Manning. His many faces depict a wide range of emotions, and they look perfectly natural- proving that he can play at other things besides football.

New York Giants jersey number 10 has since retired from the field, but we don't doubt that he can try his luck in other professions such as being a clown, impersonator, or stand-up comedian. We can see it clearly on "Eli Manning Live on Stage!"

I Swim Like This

The pair in this image is definitely having a good time with their set. This is quite impressive since synchronized swimming is no walk in the park. On the other hand, the costume department definitely came through.

That being said, the artwork on the swimmer's back is just as surprised as we are. First of all, we hope our eyes are not playing tricks on us since that looks painful! Secondly, what sorcery is this? Their make up is very much intact, from eyelashes to mascara and even the blush! This make-up department requires a hefty raise!

The Rumble at the Derby

The Manchester Derby is a must-watch for soccer fans across the globe. The passion on and off the pitch is heavier than your heart on Monday morning.

This particular derby was definitely heated and the goalkeeper wasn't taking any chances. His defender must have been having a really good time on the pitch he forgot to mark his man. This made the keeper take matters into his own hands and boy did he go for it. The unsuspecting defender, probably aiming for the ball was met with a ball all right. Just not the one he had in mind. We don't think these guys will be jumping eyes closed ever again.

Unveiling the Hoverbike!

The Moto-GP is an adrenaline-filled sport. The bikes whizzing past for numerous laps and fans eagerly watching in exhilaration. However, these speeds carry the risk of accidents adding to the tension.

The rider in this picture seems to have succumbed to this problem in a not so good way. Yet, this shot takes away the gravity of the situation by its composition. The fellow looks like he's riding the bike like a skateboard or the fictional hoverboard from various science-fiction movies. The bike itself is so well aligned you'd think this was edited. We just hope the landing was as elegant as this picture.

Disrespecting the Weather

Sports unites fans and players alike from all walks of life. Meaning a lot of tomfooleries and odd moments are bound to happen. This moment is the ultimate culture-shock.

The two ladies in the back seem to be having a cozy moment in their bikini uniforms. After all, beach volleyball is a fun sport- stress on the beach. However, you'd be inclined to think this is photoshopped since the Egyptian athlete is in full-body gear. We understand their strict cultural inhibitions when it comes to dress codes but come on man! The weather demands some respect every now and then.

The Invisible Man

Science and sport go hand in hand. One can't survive without the other. Speaking of science, this picture seems to have introduced the topic of science- fiction to the sport of ice hockey.

Ice-hockey is a heavy contact sport meaning, at some point tempers flare up and the players are involved in a scuffle. In this happenstance, two players decided to shed their gloves and teach each other some manners. However, at first glance, you'd think the red-shirt is invisible but it's just a mistimed punch connecting with his headgear as he ducked.

Oh My, Butterfly!

We can see why the photographer had the urge to float this picture on the internet. It makes for such an ‘awww moment,’ where the puppy is pulling a huge smile as a tiny monarch butterfly sits on its nose. The cuteness of the photo doubles because of the greenery and purple flowers around.

While some people have said that the butterfly is – unfortunately – photoshopped, we still think it’d make a sweet phone wallpaper or even a greeting card for a loved one! What do you think; would you purchase one?

Cat’s All, Folks

What’s happening here? Perhaps you’re confused. Well, it’s just a cat that’s shaking its own head out of the box. Or, maybe, this kitty was tired of how its face appeared to be, so a new one was ordered. If none of these reasons sounds believable, then we’re bound to think that this was just a stunt played on Halloween to scare the owners away.

A smart fellow has reported that this is just a demonstration of how these animals get through almost everything. What if one of them forgets some part of their body behind?

Bird Weather

Many designers must have gotten some serious inspiration to replicate this for the upcoming masquerade parties. So, if you see someone wearing a colorful mask that features a circular eye cut-out and a beak as a nose covering, you know where the original idea came from.

A quick glance at this picture would scare the bravest of folks! The red lorikeet lines up so well with the lady’s face that, even after realizing the truth, our brains just don’t want to believe that the two living beings are separate entities. We want to call her bird-woman.

Sometimes, timing can make normal humans do what’s said to be impossible. The photographer’s split-second decision to press the camera’s button and capture this exact bit is what makes all the difference. A good message for the audience, right?

What a beautiful shot! There’s something so soothing about this photo, like mother nature is playing violin in silence. You have a calm lake surrounded by green mountains that stretch towards the far end, a perfect blend of lighting scattering through all the colors, and a sky gleaming with countless stars.

And, then, there’s the meteor shooting across. An interesting thing is that it’s splitting into two – not many people have caught such a sight before; this just makes things even more dreamy. We’d be glad to frame it in our rooms.

The Spooky Wedding Photographer

A new style of photography? No, this was pure luck by accident. What an epic moment to have captured on the wedding party's faces!

The poor photographer accidentally took a dive while preparing to take a picture of this wedding, but luckily he snapped the photo anyway while on his way to the floor and he got it! It kind of looks like one of those 17th-century photos or the ones where they have seen a ghost. In the end, only the photographer and the ones in the picture will know exactly what those faces are saying.

Why The Long Face?

Taking selfies with your pet is an art. It is semi-impossible to get a perfect shot without luck involved when they constantly move and look around. Clearly, this mutt thought this pose was the perfect one.

Let's face it, animals are super cute, and whether or not they pose it still warms our hearts to see their cuteness coming through in each way. This particular buddy didn't look at the camera but it made the picture even more special by creating a mash-up look between them. These are moments that one cannot recreate. And that is what makes it great.

Skating On Thin Ice

The look on this dog's face is priceless and one right out of a silly kids' movie! The poor thing most definitely did not expect this to happen!

Running wild and free is any dog's dream, but falling head over heels on the slippery, cold ice probably wasn't the plan. Alfie was not going to allow the girls to have all the fun by themselves, so he decided he would invade their picture-perfect moment. In hindsight, he made the photo a real picture-perfect moment - something no one can recreate.

They say a dog is man's best friend, and Alfie thought so too. If all her other friends could pose for the photo, then surely her best friend needs to have the spot upfront. The look on his face is epic and it seems like he is having the time of his life with these ladies. Happiness all around.

There is a debate regarding which caused what; is reincarnation a part of the butterfly effect, or is it the other way around? No one knows, and no one is looking, as usual, when wondrous things happen. Dad is busy peering into the camera that catches his son, a curious soul, examining the truth with his lens.

Will the young man get to the bottom of this, uh, paradox? The photographer is a god of timing- he snapped a subject matter we have all thought about one time or another. If Grandma could return as a butterfly, could we choose our form when it’s our turn to be reborn?

This perfectly timed stunt is not easy; the photo depicts an agile black tomcat jumping for his life. According to the reporter, their neighbor intervened to save their dog while the black tabby had to fend for himself. Well, at least the feline made it out alive. Let's call the noir feline Salem, a common name given by popular media to familiar cats of witches. Is this ideally timed photo the result of lens magic or dark cat sorcery? We'll never know. We're just happy everyone got out.

Musical Chairs - Coast Guard Edition

During a Change of Command ceremony, disappearing chairs made a surprising appearance, you know, the chair game? The Coast Guard knows how to plunge headfirst into a situation! It's either that or the photographer has some serious skills- taking a photo fail spectacularly.

We don't mean to poke fun at the poor guy; we can say that it's a clean fall; no arms were flailing, no objects flying, other than the suspicious chair. Oh well, photo moments happen to the best of us. We salute the Coast Guard, who kept moving forward with the event, while probably screaming mentally, "Lookout!"

Shapeshifting Cat Gave Me a Fright

We know cat owners can relate when we say that mousers are capable of strange things. From this pic, it would seem at first glance that our feline has grown a body. Cats have many talents like ignoring their fur parents, scratching furniture, chasing birds, and mauling mice. But we never thought that shapeshifting is one of them!

Somebody should ask Madam photographer if that is their kitty in the photo, for all you know it could be the Egyptian cat-god Bastet. Tabbies are said to be followed around by luck; we know at least one cat that brings a lucky shot!

The Silence of The Lamp

Ah, the memes this one could inspire crack us up. Doggo seems to ask, "Don't throw shade!," we can't be sure if this is "The Lady and The Lamp, Canine Edition." We’re making fun of the poor floof, while the good boy stands there, on all fours wonderfully confused if he should make the first move or wait for the curious lump or lamp to meet him halfway.

Man, this one's going to be a long wait; somebody should grow a heart and tell pupper that things are not always what they seem and that he should be cautious with matters of the heart. Get over here, Rover!

Frozen In Time

This snap taken by a photographer is another one for the best or worst-case category. The man was innocently posing, unaware that a candid poolside scene was unfolding behind him. Photo-wise, it's a perfect photobomb theme, but that lady is having the worst day ever at the poolside!

You know what happens next; the other pool visitors are about to get splashed. Wait, there's more to this story; we are wondering if anyone pushed the robust madam or she lost her footing. One thing is for sure: The lady goes in, while the guy posing for the photo is also in, for a surprise, that is.

Look, Mommy, I Made A friend!

This munchkin let an opportunity slip from his cute sausage fingers. Oh wait, he's too young for any opportunities or meaningful grabbing, other than grabbing his milk bottle! But such limits set by reality and physics don't bother him- he knows zero about science. Plus, nothing can stop a curious baby anyway, so that's also there.

Babies and suspended animation aside, this is another excellent poolside pic. We can't help but ask why unpredictable things often happen next to or with water. And the biggest mystery is how the photographer knew something cool's about to go down and clicked. Both lensman and baby are in their moment.

Lips And Limbs, Baby!

As a race, we are far from perfect. Case in point, we are having fun at this guy's expense. That sassy hand on the hip is not our hero's limb; it's a usual yet still fun photography quirk. But his lips are happening, and with this unforgettable picture, the internet is not passing the opportunity to make good-natured fun of it.

With all this attention from one fateful picture with stellar timing, this man might get a cult following! That mouth speaks volumes, and we are itching to know what topic made him go duckface. He seems to be mouthing, "Oh please, I look so much better than you!"

To Chomp Down Or Not

Man’s best friend can sense things, they said. Dogs are fun to have around, they said. Yet fur parents know canines can be a handful, or in this case, a mouthful. Look at this naughty boy who’s about to munch on something that’s not dog chow, and he knows it. There’s a hint of panic in those puppy dog eyes.

Spot’s antics caught in this perfectly timed photo are genuinely adorable. However, neither doggo’s pose or cuteness will save this adorable floofster from the retribution he’s about to get. Poor pupper is so down for any play that he’s trying to start it.

 

Unicorns Hiding in Plain Sight

Most girls dream of seeing or owning a unicorn until they come of age and realize they're mythical creatures. This is a pretty heart-breaking moment for some even marking the end of their childhood imagination.

However, we might have it all wrong as this image has some damning evidence of their existence. It seems the creatures do exist after all and they have some magical powers to boot, one being shape-shifting. This giraffe's shadow shows a horn that's synonymous with the unicorn. It's probably an angling effect but we could be onto something here besides truth sometimes is stranger than fiction.

Ahead of Its Time

Cats really love hunting birds and rodents and they'll go to great lengths to nab their prey. Camouflage and speed seem to be their weapon of choice but this cat has upped the ante making those two seem like child's play.

It seems our feline friend has found a way to detach its head from its body making it easy to scout the prey and attack as the poor fellows are distracted. If only this was true, we'd have won a gallery of awards for this discovery. Upon closer inspection, you'll notice the ledge neatly masking the cat's body making this a legendary hunter in its own right.
